School Plantroom Refurbishment, North London

OVERVIEW

The MEP Consultancy Co provided mechanical and electrical design consultancy services to support the refurbishment of a school plantroom within a live educational environment. The project involved the replacement of existing plant and the development of a new, high-efficiency heating system designed to provide 1.5MW of heating capacity. The design incorporated high-efficiency condensing boilers, variable speed circulation pumps and integration with a Trend Building Management System (BMS). Working collaboratively with the wider project team, MEP Consultancy provided the technical design and coordination required to support the successful delivery of the upgraded plantroom.

Brief

Appointed to provide the mechanical and electrical design services, The MEP Consultancy Co was required to support the replacement of the existing plantroom systems. Our scope included:

  • A high-efficiency heating system providing 1.5MW of heating capacity
  • Condensing boiler plant and associated mechanical services
  • Variable speed circulation pumps
  • Mechanical pipework modifications and connections
  • Trend BMS integration and controls requirements
  • Testing, commissioning and system optimisation requirements

The design was developed to improve energy efficiency, system control and long-term operational performance, while integrating with the existing building infrastructure.

Challenge

The project was delivered within a live school environment, requiring careful planning and coordination to ensure essential services could be maintained throughout the works. Key considerations included a short mobilisation period, the presence of asbestos-containing materials affecting existing pipework routes, and the requirement to maintain a continuous domestic hot water supply. Temporary heating provisions were also required during the winter months, meaning the proposed design and project delivery strategy needed to account for the operational requirements of the school while the existing plantroom was being upgraded.

The MEP Consultancy Co worked closely with the wider project team to develop a practical and coordinated design solution that addressed these constraints and supported efficient project delivery.

OUTCOME

The completed plantroom now provides a reliable and energy-efficient heating solution, with enhanced system control through the Trend BMS. Through considered MEP design, technical coordination and close collaboration with the wider project team, the project was successfully delivered within a six-month programme while maintaining essential heating and hot water services throughout the works. The upgraded system provides improved control, enhanced operational efficiency and a robust long-term solution for the school.
